DNCC tames the defiant

2023-03-12T10:39:37+00:00

'Where there is a will, there is a way' is an opt-repeated adage. But, in Bangladesh conditions---both in political and social contexts---most people have lost faith in the saying. They argue that vested interests are so strong in all the places that it is almost impossible to change anything for the better.

Empowering mayors

2023-02-26T04:28:39+00:00

A mayor is said to be the father of a city. Voters show overwhelming support in electing him during mayoral election and pin hope on him thinking that he would sort out the chronic civic problems. But six months into the office, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq has revealed how hollow the term ‘father of the city’ is!

Strong syndicate of 190 bus companies in city: DNCC Mayor

2023-02-26T04:23:59+00:00

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq on Saturday said a big syndicate of thousand crores of taka is there behind a large number of bus companies in the capital, reports UNB. “There’s a big syndicate of thousand crores of taka behind this so many bus companies…I can say, for example, that if I’m the proprietor of a bus company and can collect 10 buses from some owners, I’ll get the personal share from the profit of the buses. It’s very tough to break the syndicate,” he said.

DNCC Mayor bemoans lack of power to deal with city problems

2023-02-08T08:01:58+00:00

Despite being the city father, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq on Saturday bemoaned that he has no authority to deal with its 80 percent problems, reports UNB. “Some 80 percent of the problems are not under my purview to solve those. Traffic jam, water-logging, taking off billboards are not my issues. My jobs are officially to oversee the problems relating to parks, streetlights and waste management only,” he said.

Bring Wasa, Rajuk under DCCs

2023-02-01T04:58:13+00:00

Mayor Annisul Huq wants Rajuk and Wasa under the jurisdiction of the city corporations to get rid of the city's water logging problem. The mayor can do nothing to address the water logging as Wasa digs canals and maintains storm-water drainage system, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor said yesterday at a programme organised by Bangladesh University.

Bringing Wasa, Rajuk under City Corporations

2023-02-01T04:53:29+00:00

Policymakers would do well to pay heed to the call of the DNCC mayor to bring Rajuk and Wasa under the jurisdiction of the city corporations in order to tackle the city's worsening waterlogging problem. The mayor's demand has strong rationale as the city corporations have no control over departments such as Wasa, Rajuk, Police and other service providers in the capital.
