The city corporation will launch a drive to demolish illegal constructions on the streets on the first day of the next year on Friday, he said.

The mayor was addressing a citizens’ rally at Gabtoli Bus Terminal on Tuesday.

He had on several occasions in the past asked owners of illegal constructions on the street from Shyamoli to Aminbazar via Gabtoli to leave the place.

On Tuesday, he said, “There cannot be any illegal parking or constructions on the streets in Shyamoli, Kalyanpur, Gabtoli and Aminbazar from the first day of 2016.”

Huq said illegal constructions, shops and rundown buses will also be removed from Gabtoli Bus Terminal.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association General Secretary Khandker Enayet Ullah, among others, were present.

Enayet Ullah, however, urged the mayor to arrange alternatives for the transporters to keeping rundown vehicles on the streets and terminals.

The mayor said the government has a plan to build a terminal for trucks in Gabtoli.
