Speakers at a memorial program have paid rich tribute to late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq. 

They recalled the success stories that decorated Annisul’s life in business, cultural and administrative fields.

Hosted by The Asian Age at a city hotel on Wednesday evening, a documentary on Annisul’s multidimensional life was shown at the beginning of the program illustrating his dedicated involvement with DNCC, cultural activities and business entrepreneurship.

US Ambassador Mercia Bernicat admired Annisul’s massive endeavors through which a lot of dramatic changes were brought to Dhaka city.

His dynamism greatly reduced traffic jams on different roads of the city and he succeeded in cleaning up the city to a remarkable extent, Syed Badrul Ahsan, Associate Editor of The Asian Age said while addressing the program.

Bangladesh Bank’s former governor Dr Atiur Rahman spoke very high of the impressive leadership qualities Annisul Huq possessed.        

The inhabitants of Dhaka city will never forget the persistence with which Annisul Huq evicted illegal truck stands from Tejgaon area and removed unauthorized settlements from some other parts of the city, Dr Atiur Rahman further said. Annisul Huq is an ideal figure to be followed by the country’s youths, Dr Atiur Rahman added.

Maj Gen (retd) Shamim Chowdhury expressed his grief at the sudden demise of Annisul Huq during his speech.

Lt Gen (retd) M Fazle Akbar recalled the brotherly relations he had with Annisul Huq. He urged the city administrators to carry on the legacy of courage and determination Annisul Huq showed while holding the mayoral post of DNCC.

Shafiul Alam Mahiuddin, President of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) talked about the beneficial deeds Annisul Huq had done for the country’s business, trade and commercial sectors.

Eminent politician and leader of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) recollected the humanitarian approach Annisul Huq always upheld to the workers and ordinary masses of Dhaka city.

Reputed vocal artiste Shimul Mustafa recited Syed Shamsul Huq’s poem “Amar Porichoy” paying homage to Annisul Huq’s remembrances.

M Shoeb Chowdhury, Chairman of The Asian Age spoke on the excellent personality and transparent image Annisul Huq cherished throughout his life. He thanked all guests for arriving at the memorial program.

A cultural show was held at the end of the program rendering Rabindranath Tagore’s songs for paying honor to Annisul Huq’s memories.

The program was attended by business leaders, bankers, politicians, foreign diplomats, journalists, higher officials, academic scholars and civil society members.
