Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq said on Friday that chikungunya is spreading fast in the capital due to high breeding of mosquitoes.

City corporations are not responsible  for the spread of the mosquito-borne disease, he added.

“We are trying our best to kill mosquitoes outside residences. It’s not possible [for city corporation] to go every house to kill mosquitoes,” Annisul said at a press briefing in the capital.

The city corporation has taken comprehensive steps to kill mosquitoes by spraying medicines, he pointed out.

The mayor expressed his sadness and great empathy with city people for their sufferings from chikungunya.

He, however, assured the people that the city corporation has taken all necessary steps to combat the disease.

“We’ve taken measures to combat chikungunya, but some factors are not under our control.”

Aedes mosquitoes breed in clear water, especially inside homes. The city corporation cannot go to houses to kill mosquitoes, Annisul said.

Epidemiologist Professor Mahmudur Rahman, Entomologists Tauhiduddin Ahmed and Dr Manjur A Chowdhury were present at the press briefing.

The North Dhaka mayor and health experts at the press meet said the present chikungunya situation can be called an epidemic.Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon said on Friday said that chikungunya has not turned into an epidemic in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

He hopes that the disease will come under control within four weeks.Sayeed Khokon made the remarks while inaugurating a drive against outbreak of Ades mosquitoes in the capital.

The mayor said, “We have started a crush programmee at 11 wards in Dhaka South City Corporation area.”

“The programme will continue. Some 300 workers are working to combat the disease,” he added.

“The city corporation can operate a mosquito killing programmee outside residences, but Ades mosquitoes breed in fresh water inside houses,” he explained.
