The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Saturday sealed off Shyamoli Shishu Mela in the city as the authorities have been running it illegally for the last 12 years.
The DNCC launched a mobile court, led by its executive magistrate Mohammad Sajid Anwar, at the Shishu Mela and disconnected its electricity line and closed two of its entrance gates, said DNCC public relations officer Md Manzur-e-Mowla.
Talking to reporters at Shishu Mela premises during the evection drive, DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq said Shishu Mela will be reopened under the supervision of the corporation soon. Besides, three more new parks will be opened for the city dwellers very soon, he added.
The DNCC has planned for constructing 50 parks and entertainment centres within the next two years, he said.
The Public Works Ministry handed over 1.40 acres land to the then undivided Dhaka City Corporation on October 15 in 1985 to build the Shishu Park.
Later, the corporation leased it out to Shishu Mela authorities for three years at Tk 1.45 lakh on 19 February in 2002.
But the owners of Shisdhu Mela had been running it without renewing the lease or paying the lease money for the last 12 years.
The corporation did not carry out evection drive to remove the Shishu Mela due to a writ petition filed with the High Court. The DNCC authorities conducted the eviction drive as there was no injunction despite the case was continuing, PRO Manzur said.
Senior officials of DNCC were present during the drive.
