The two Dhaka mayors have announced to waive holding tax upto 1,500 square feet for Freedom Fighters (FFs) living in the capital city. They also informed that a welfare fund would be constituted for the distressed freedom fighters.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq made the announcement at a reunion program of the freedom fighters held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

DSCC and DNCC jointly organized the program marking the Victory Day. Amir Hossen Mollah, a Freedom Fighter, said that currently the city authorities have been waiving holding tax of FFs upto 1000 square feet.

He urged the mayor to expand the holding tax-free area of households. Moreover, some of them demanded for a separate graveyard for the FFs. The DSCC mayor said:

“The FFs, who are the best sons of our soil, are only asking to waive holding taxes. It makes us shameful. We will wipe out the regret. We will stand beside you anytime and in any need.” Khokon also said the FFs would get special facilities while hiring city corporations’ community centers.

In the meantime, Mayor Annisul commented that some of the dreams of the freedom fighters were yet to be met by the state. We might have not the ability to fulfill all of your necessities. “However, we do not have any lack of cordiality,” said Annisul.

Unofficially every graveyard in Dhaka has separate space for the FFs, narrating so, he said: “If you want me to show you, I would say no official arrangement in this regard. But I will instruct all the burial sites to preserve separate space as soon as possible.”
