Awami League mayoral hopeful Atiqul Islam said he will complete the unfinished tasks of late mayor Annisul Huq if he is elected mayor in the Dhaka North City Corporation by-polls.He made the pledge while conducting a mass campaign in front of his office in Banani area of the capital on Thursday.

“I have got a green signal for the election from the highest post of the ruling party. So, I am carrying out a mass campaign,” he said.

“You (people) will know it soon. The Awami League nomination board will disclose this according to the poll schedule,” he added.

Atiqul, also a former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, started visiting political leaders, lawmakers, reputed persons to get their support.

“Our city is partially inactive and we have to make it active,” he told people while exchanging views with them.

If you want the continuity of development in the capital, you should provide your support for the AL-nominated candidate, Atiqul said.

“I am very glad to meet them and now very much excited as people are giving thanks to me from their hearts,” he added.

Annisul Huq undertook some important work such as operation of 6,000 buses, construction of U-loop for reducing traffic jam and resolving of water-logging.

The Election Commission sources said the DNCC by-polls will be held in the last week of February. The mayoral post has fallen vacant due to the death of Annisul Huq on November 30.

Annisul was elected DNCC maiden mayor in 2015 on Awami League ticket.
