The two took over mayoral responsibilities for Dhaka South and Dhaka North respectively around two and a half years ago, and Khokon used to treat Annisul ‘as his elder brother’.

Khokon said he used to talk to Annisul almost every morning, discuss the development plan of the city and get inspired by each other’s work.

While expressing his feelings, Khokon became emotional.

Mayor Annisul Huq died on Thursday in London fighting a brain blood vessel disease for the last four months.

Like Khokon, Annisul was not regular in politics but decided to contest in mayoral elections for Dhaka North City Corporation at the ‘request’ of the prime minister. The election was held on Apr 28, 2015.

“It was unexpected. He fell ill suddenly and fought death for four months. We never thought that he will go this way,” Khokon told reporters.

“My relationship with him was very close – like two brothers. We used to exchange pleasantries every morning. We used to discuss how the problems in the city could be solved,” he added.

At one stage while talking to the media, tears started to pour out of his eyes.

Khokon highly praised Annisul’s boldness as mayor in taking the decisions and carrying those out.

He also said his demise was an ‘irrecoverable loss to our society’.

He urged the people to pray for the departed soul and forgive him if there were any mistake Annisul had made during his lifetime.
