Dhaka north city mayor Annisul Huq died at 10:20pm Bangladesh time at a hospital in London in the United Kingdom.
Doctors at the hospital officially declared him dead removing him from life support, family members said.
Dhaka North City Corporation public relations officer ASM Mamun confirmed the news quoting Annisul’s eldest son Navidul Huq.
Annisul who had been on life support since November 27. He was 65.
He was under treatment at Wellington Hospital in the UK since August 13 while he was there on a private tour.
From a television presenter to a successful businessman, Annisul was elected mayor of the north part of the divided capital in 2015 with the blessing of the ruling party Awami League.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed condolence at his death.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia also expressed shock at the mayor’s death.
Annisul’s body would be flown to Dhaka on Saturday.
He would be buried at the Banani graveyard after his namaz-e-janana at the Army Stadium after asr payers, according to press release of the DNCC. In the UK, his janaza will be held today at London Central Mosque after the jumma prayers.
He is survived by his wife Rubana Huq and three children Navidul Huq, Wamiq Umairais and Tanisha Huq.
Annisul served as the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association for two consecutive terms in 2005 and 2006.
He was also the president of the Federation of the Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the apex trade body of the country, in 2008-2010 during the military-installed caretaker administration.
