Urban planners have said Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) must carry on the projects initiated by late mayor Annisul Huq calling those as ideal and result oriented initiatives for the development of the capital.

“DNCC mayor Annisul Huq has died. But, a number of development projects taken by him, have yet been finished and we should pay focus to implement the tasks for building a modern Dhaka city,” city planner Professor Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury said, reports BSS.

He also suggested formation of a “citizen committee” to oversee the implementation of the development projects initiated by Huq.

Urban development expert Professor Nazrul Islam paid rich tributes to Huq saying some of his initiatives like eviction of the Tejgaon truck stand would be regarded as steps to make Dhaka city livable.

“Late mayor Annisul has done some wonderful works . . . We should work to implement his unfinished development initiatives such as upgrading mass transport system, constructing u-loops on different roads, developing modern waste management and making footpaths free from hawkers,” Islam said.

The experts noted that the capital city witnessed several development projects that largely gave the capital a cleaner and greener look with a massive cleanliness and afforestation campaign while installation of CCTV cameras at different strategic points fulfilled a major criterion of a secured city since Huq took the charge of DNCC as the mayor of Dhaka north on May 6 in 2015.

They said the late mayor had started constructing 11 u-loops on Abdullahpur-Satrasta Road as part of his hectic efforts to ease Dhaka’s notorious traffic jam while his efforts to drive out land grabbers to recover and re-excavate the canals bettered the city’s dilapidated sewerage systems.

“He built a number of hygienic public toilets at different strategic points of city and bring the entire bus services under five companies to ensure better services to the city dwellers,” Nazrul Islam said.

Architect Iqbal Habib said late mayor Annisul achieved many successes and also was on way to achieve many more successful works.

“Government should expedite the unfinished development works of the late mayor by ensuing close monitoring of the concerned ministries, he added.
