Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) freed the footpaths around the Australian High Commission in Dhaka conducting an eviction drive yesterday. The second drive of DNCC was launched as the commission did not remove iron poles on the walkways, said DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq.
The commission verbally applied for time after being served notice to remove their security features illegally occupying the walkways. Waiting for more than ten days, DNCC men equipped with five bulldozers began freeing the footpaths. They used gas cutter to cut off the 159 iron poles. Later, the concrete pile and poles were moved away by pickup vans. Previously in April 26, DNCC in a drive removed 33 concrete blocks on the embassy walkways. The embassy promised to remove other blocks and poles by May 7.
DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq in the afternoon told reporters that foreigners had been occupying the walkways illegally for years. “We, in the meantime, made some of the embassy footpaths occupation-free.” The mayor in the embassy area said: “The effort for the last six months ends up freeing the footpaths.”
